We moved Trenton into Seattle Pacific University last week. It was hard. One of my dear friends told me this about moving your child out of your home:
"It is surreal. It goes against every maternal instinct in your body."
She was right! BUT. I was so impressed with the university. Two full days of parent/family orientation really helped me feel much better about Trenton being there. The focus of the school is on the students. From professor to the university's president, they all emphasized mentoring as their number one goal. They even have adults living in the dorms 24/7, and each adult is required to have a Master's degree in Counseling. The university also really focuses on servanthood, and they do a lot in the city. The school is the only major Christian university located in the heart of a large urban city. In fact, the first day of student orientation (after the parents were kicked out, LOL) was a full day of working in the city with volunteer organizations.
They kicked us [the parents] out all right, but they did it gracefully with a formal convocation (a welcoming ceremony much like gradation) designed to evoke both laughter and tears. Dammit, they did it well.
Not to say that it's all boring and staid at SPU. I heard something about midnight runs through the campus wearing nothing but underwear. I did not want to hear any more details about THAT.
Here are some pictures:
Trenton in front of his dorm, "Hill Hall". It is on a hill. I lost some weight.
Trenton and his roommate Caleb. They are perfectly matched. They gave me identical looks of horror when I suggested maybe putting something on the walls.
I call this, "Ikea-style" furniture.

Caleb's bed. He is from Hawaii. He brought the TV, and Trenton brought the Xbox and fridge. All the necessities of dorm life. If you are a guy.

I like how the desks curve around the window...lots of space! I also love that he brought his "treasure" box (on the top shelf) that he got when we lived in Korea. Memories!
Trenton and Caden. They miss each other. Tristan even misses him! He said he was going to sleep in Trenton's bed, but so far he hasn't touched it. It sits there like a sad little shrine. I try not to look at it directly. Maybe in a few weeks.
I am proud of my college boy!

I wish you and your lovely family all the best! It is so sweet to see your boys together!
You did it! The first week's the hardest, I think. Though when K's been gone for a month I start to feel like everything is off kilter and isn't right again until all 4 kids are under my roof again. SPU is such a great school. I'm still hoping K picks it too! (Seriously, how awesome would that be?! Why oh why can't my kid arrange her life around MY preferences? LOL)
Yes, this first week has been hard! I totally know what you mean about "off kilter". There's just something so RIGHT about when your kids are all under one roof! It's like a feeling of total peace.
SPU is a great school. I had no idea how "pre-med" it is. Freshmen who want to major in pre-med start immediately in that major, and between 90 and 100 percent of them are admitted into medical school straight from SPU. It is actually known as better than the UW for kids who want to major in medicine. That isn't Trenton though! Bummer. He was worried about his biology class until he found out the class was the "non pre-med major" biology class. LOL.
Wow... so he REALLY is in university then?! Hard to believe from our Korea days... *sigh* Why do they get older... just makes us OLDER!!!! Glad to see that the uni took such good care to transition the kids and the parents to this new stage in life... that's rare and special. Looks like a great fit for Trenton.
